Xiamen University, or XMU for short, a comprehensive research-oriented national key university directly under the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China and under the direct administration of the central government, is a national and world first-class university construction university (Class A), and a university led by the National 2011 Plan. It is a national key university of Project 211 and Project 985, and a degree-authorized independent auditing unit. Xiamen University has been selected into the Everest plan, the 111 Plan, the Outstanding Engineer Education Program, the Outstanding Legal Talent Education Program,, the Outstanding Doctor Education Program, the National University Students' Innovative Experiment Plan, the National University Students' Innovative Entrepreneurship Training Plan, the New Engineering Research and Practice Program, the State Construction High Level University Public Postgraduate Programs, is the national innovative talent training demonstration base, the national university students' cultural quality education base, and the host institution of Chinese government scholarship for international students, China's first demonstration universities to deepen innovation and entrepreneurship education reform and the National Union of Innovation and Entrepreneurship Practice led to the launch of universities, as well as a founding member of China European Union of Business Schools and China Artificial Intelligence Education Association. It has been the member of University General Education Alliance and CDIO Engineering Education Alliance, co-built by the Ministry of Education, State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defence, Fujian Province and Xiamen City. Founded in 1921 by Patriotic Overseas Chinese Leader Tan Kah Kee, Xiamen University is the first university founded by overseas Chinese in the history of modern education in China, which is one of the first universities to recruit graduate students in China. It is the first university to build an independent campus overseas. Its early buildings have been listed in the national key cultural relics protection units and the first batch of China's 20th century architectural heritage list.
